Congress approves BBL

Both Houses of Congress passed yesterday the Bangsamoro Basic Law after years of getting stalled in the legislative department.

Voting 227 yes, 11 no and 2 abstention the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading a substitute bill for the original HB 6475, otherwise known as the BTC-drafted version.

In the Senate, the upper chamber also voted to approve SB 1717 (21 yes, 0 no) after long hours of amendments reaching midnight.

A bicameral conference committee is expected to be convened on July to settle the differences in the two versions of the approved bills.

An earlier media interview quoted House Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas saying both Houses would approve the report of the bicameral conference committee in the morning of July 23 and signed by the President in time for his State of the Nation Address at 4pm of that day. ##
